Happy Taco Tuesday! How to avoid GMOs in your Mexican dinners…

Happy Tuesday!  What better day to whip out the taco shells, ground beef, cheese, and have a mexican Taco Tuesday dinner, right?  I was talking with a friend about Mexican food, and she inquired about how to enjoy tacos without ingesting heaping amounts of GMOs.  In honor of that, today I am going to show you how to enjoy your tacos while eliminating the GMOs!

For those of you that don’t know, the majority of all corn, canola, and soy products in the USA are currently genetically modified.  Yes, that means any time you go out for Mexican food, those delicious tortilla chips are made from GMO corn.  Bummer right?  I know! I feel exactly the same.  Why does this matter again? Oh right, because many studies have shown that GMOs have caused tumors, cancer, and killed animals after incorporated into their diets.  Although there is nothing we can currently do to prevent GMO’s when dining out (besides only eating at organic restaurants), there is a LOT you can do to avoid GMO’s when making food at home!  

In terms of Mexican food, it is important to purchase organic tortilla chips, or chips that have a Non-GMO Project Verified label like the one to the right. Image Where can you get these?  Well Whole Foods, Natural Markets, and Trader Joe’s offer a variety of organic and nongmo label products.  Not near one of these? No fear!  Here is an entire list of Non-GMO brands, that you can easily order online from stores or amazon.

Believe it or not, these brands make pretty much every type of food you could want, including taco shells, tortillas, tortilla chips (and of course non mexican foods as well) – so there is no reason to be ingesting a GMO filled taco when you don’t need to be!  For example, popular taco shells such as Ortego indeed are full of GMOs,so opt for a great organic option, Garden of Eatin organic corn shells or Whole Foods brand 365 with the Non GMO verified label on them!

Aside from corn, don’t forget to avoid cooking your taco meat with any soy or canola oils!  Much like corn, most soy and canola that are non organic in the USA are GMOs.  GREAT alternatives to these oils are extra virgin olive oil or coconut oils!! Not only are these non gmo but these are also much healthier alternatives that offer a lot of beneficial nutrients.

Top your organic taco shells, with some GMO free cooked beef, some organic cheese, and some lettuce and tomato, and BAM!  Taco Tuesday is not only salvaged but in fact can be considered quite a healthy meal!

Rats eating GMO corn get tumors and die early, are we next?

Did you know that about 90% of the US corn supply is Genetically Modified?

Did you know that a study done looking at the long term effects of GMO corn on rats showed they developed horrifying tumors, widespread organ damage, and premature death?

Did you know that this study has been deemed “the most thorough research ever published into the health effects of GM food crops and the herbicide Roundup on rats” and is the only lifetime study yet to be done on GMO foods!?

What does this all mean?  Well – the most long term study done to this day on GMO corn tell us this:

  • Up to 50% of males and 70% of females suffered premature death.
  • Rats that drank trace amounts of Roundup (at levels legally allowed in the water supply) had a 200% to 300% increase in large tumors.
  •  Rats fed GM corn and traces of Roundup suffered severe organ damage including liver damage and kidney damage.

The study fed these rats NK603, the Monsanto variety of GM corn that’s grown across North America and widely fed to animals and humans. This is the same corn that’s in your corn-based breakfast cereal, corn tortillas and corn snack chips.

If this doesn’t say enough I don’t know what does.  GMO food is one of the biggest and most dangerous issues our society is currently facing.   Unfortunately the studies promoting GMOs look at short-term effects (now we can see why).  If this study above is the first one showing long term GMO effects, what does that say?  Looks like GMOs have been forced into our food supply with limited research, and now we are becoming the lab rats.  If these pictures depict anything close to what we are in store for we should all be alarmed. Avoiding GMOs takes time, but unless you want to end up like this rat,  its worth your time.  Do yourself a favor and before chowing down on some corn tortillas and salsa – check out this list on ways to avoid GMOs.

Feed me, Seymour! Are you feeding cancer cells?

Here’s a thought.  If cancer was a wild fire, would you add more fuel to it so it would never go out? How about if it was a vicious plant (think Little Shop of Horrors), would you consistently water it so it would flourish?   Probably not.  Well remember that time I talked about high-fructose corn syrup being bad? Well guess what, it still is.  In case my first post didn’t stick, here’s some more insight. Besides from containing Mercury, a carcinogen, its shown that CANCER CELLS FEED ON high-fructose corn syrup after it metabolizes through the liver.

You may say so what, isn’t sugar (glucose) just as bad?   NO.  Although sugar is not good for our health either, our bodies metabolize glucose (sugar) and fructose (HFC) differently.  It has been shown that tumor cells use FRUCTOSE for cell division and to speed up tumor growth over that of glucose.

“This cancer-feeding fructose is what the majority of Americans are consuming on a daily basis, to the point where high-fructose corn syrup is their number one source of calories,” explains this article from Green Med.  This is effective our children too.  Kids are consuming sugar in excess through juice boxes, candy, and even ‘healthy’ sports beverages. Extreme huh?  Well we consume 150 grams of sugar each day; whereas, many experts believe that the number should be around 15 grams per day or lower to prevent cancer.

Although we don’t think we are literally opening cancers mouth and feeding it, we are.  As cancer rates in this country are on the rise it is crucial we make the dietary changes necessary to stop it before its too late.  It drives me crazy to see people ingesting these things left and right with no awareness to what it is doing to them.  Again, natural sweeteners like Stevia or honey are GREAT substitutes with low calories that are shown to PREVENT diseases.

Yabba Dabba Don’t! Why Flintstones vitamins are toxic!

Attention parents and Flinstones enthusiasts!  Just when you thought you were doing the right thing by giving your child these cute little colorful vitamins, we are thrown a curve ball.  In a recent article by GreenMed it has been shown that Flinstone’s childrens vitamins, “Pediatricians #1 Choice,” contain ingrediants such as Aspartame, GMO Corn starch, Hydrogenated oil, and other hazardous chemicals! Not sure why these are bad? (Check out my last few posts and I explain all the gory details of aspartame, gmos, and more)

That’s right, these “vitamins” claim to be filling a nutritional void in our children, but in fact they are doing more harm than good. In fact – the product even has a “do not overdose” disclaimer on it – because in fact the artificial iron put in these vitamins could be TOXIC if taken in large quantities. Poison control huh?  Just who I want to call when I think I’m aiding my child’s nutrition.

Don’t believe it?  Well Europe does!  In fact, according to Natural News, many of the substances used in these vitamins are considered HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES in Europe!

How can this be?  Well marketing has managed to make these cute cartoon friends seem safer, more delicious, and friendlier then anything out there.  In fact I am sure if I asked, these vitamins are the first children’s vitamins to come to mind in both parents and kids.  This marketing scam is surely doing one thing, convincing us to buy.  The thing it is not doing is the reason we want the vitamins, to nourish and aid the development and growth of our children.

What should we use instead?  Parents looking for an alternative to commercial vitamins like Flintstones should check out whole food-based vitamin supplement brands like MegaFood, Garden of Life, and Pure Synergy. These brands use vitamins and nutrients derived from whole foods rather than laboratory concoctions, which means the body can assimilate them more effectively.  Protect your children and stay clear from these toxic cartoon chewables.

Some broccoli a day, keeps the cancer away!

Image Attention chemo and radiation believers!  Would you believe me if I said there was another miracle “drug” out there, one that could prevent the cancer before we even got it? Sounds amazing right?  Well guess what, there is!  It is called broccoli.  Most people think broccoli is gross, disgusting, tasteless, and has no value besides being green and taking over a prime spot on our dinner plate, that could be better filled with something delicious.  Well I have great news!  After reading this post you will have a new understanding of broccoli, one that makes it a worthy component of your dinner! The answer is broccoli sprouts! Studies show that mixing broccoli with broccoli sprouts make its anti-cancer effect over 2 times more effective!  For those of you that don’t know the difference between the two, broccoli sprouts are 3-4 day old broccoli, looking like little sprouts seen below.

Another important thing to note is that most people OVERCOOK broccoli, allowing it to lose the nutritious and anti-cancer impact it has.  Articles have shown that 2 minutes in a microwave or 7 minutes of steaming broccoli can destroy important nutrients.  Nutritionists recommend steaming broccoli for only two to four minutes to protect both the enzyme and the vegetable’s other nutrients.

So there you have it! A reason to welcome some broccoli on to your dinner plate with open arms! Too lazy to adjust to these greens? Don’t want to bother with seeking out some additional sprouts in the supermarket? These little changes have the ability to prevent you from spending months of your future sitting in a chemo chair with an IV in your arm.  Why take the time once its too late, but not take the time now? Hell no, GMO! Are you eating Frankenfood? I bet you are

What if I told you that I knew a secret to protecting your health and possibly preventing health concerns in your future?..what if I told you it was by avoiding something that is now uncontrollably taking over our food supply? ..what if I told you if you keep buying food from large corporations you will likely develop cancer in 20-30 years time?  Its time to address a higher level issue, something that is effecting the majority of food we consume, something called GMOs.

The US is currently replacing our real food supply with fake genetically engineered foods, foods that studies show animals avoid and DIE from eating!  This WILL result in a multitude of increased health problems for our generation, especially cancer.

What are GMOs? According to NonGMOProject, “GMOs, also known as genetically modified organisms, are plants or animals that have been genetically engineered with DNA from bacteria, viruses or other plants and animals. These experimental combinations of genes from different species cannot occur naturally. Virtually all commercial GMOs are engineered to withstand direct application of herbicide and/or to produce an insecticide. Despite biotech industry promises, none of the GMO traits currently on the market offer increased yield, drought tolerance, enhanced nutrition, or any other consumer benefit. Meanwhile, a growing body of evidence connects GMOs with health problems, environmental damage and violation of farmers’ and consumers’ rights.”

Basically, GMOs result in fake frankenfoods that are cheaper and last longer then real food, but offer no benefit at all to the consumer.  Why would these exist you ask? Because a company Monsanto is currently running and corrupting the agricultural pipeline, is steamrolling this movement for one reason only, to profit.

In fact, “Most developed nations don’t consider GMOs to be safe. In more than 60 countries around the world, including Australia, Japan, and all of the countries in the European Union, there are significant restrictions or outright bans on the production and sale of GMOs. In the U.S., the government has approved GMOs based on studies conducted by the same corporations that created them and profit from their sale.”   The fact that other countries REFUSE to use this stuff and we do not BLOWS MY MIND.  Leave it to America, land of the free, to choose money and profit over the  well being of the people.

UNFAIR you say? What makes this process more unfair is that Monsanto is pushing so that there is no obligation to LABEL which foods contain GMOs in them!  Correct folks, we are being taking advantage of and denied our right to know what we are eating with no say at all. To the left is a list of HIGH RISK crops that contain GMOs in the USA.  Corn, Soy, and Sugar make up the three largest GMO high risk foods in the USA.  This means that most mainstream products that contain ANY of these ingredients are likely no longer real, but are GMOs.  So what if corn or sugar has GMOs, what does that even mean?

Let’s bring this closer to home.  Gone are the days of running to the store and buying “food.”  Basically in todays USA unless you are specifically hunting out “organic” or “non GMO” food, you are eating a fake chemically modified version of something that tastes like food.  Currently, the only way you can help yourself is by knowing what foods DO NOT have GMOs, and assume everything else does, because believe me, pretty much every other food will contain some sort of GMO ingredient.  Take Doritos, delicious cheesy corn chipgoodness RIGHT?  Well PepsiCo has been a major part in funding the ANTI-GMO labeling movement..and here’s why.  Doritos are made of mostly GMOs!
..Maybe a list of these brands will make it more real.  All of these brands are using GMO ingredients in pretty much ALL their foods.

What can you do?  Fortunately there is this awesome website nongmoproject.org that provides us with all the info we need to know and exactly where we can go to buy non-gmo foods.  Click here for a list of non-gmo food brands.  It sucks that in today’s world we have to work so hard to protect our health, but I dare you.  Take a look at the list above and next time your hungry, think twice before grabbing a bag of Doritos.   In any instance of world crisis we quickly reach for survival guides or ways to survive.  Well  think of this list above as your survival guide, because believe me, it will be.
